History of The Blues in 400 Words
The blues is a variety of music that can be vocal, instrumental (blues guitar) or both. It applies the ‘blue’ notes which are established on a ‘minor pentatonic’ scale quite regularly, otherwise recognised as the blues scale.
Blues music was inferred from the African-American communities in the U.S. out of work songs, spiritual songs, field hollers, chants, shouts and elementary ballads that rhymed. A lot of facets of the blues are indicitive of African influence.
The call-and-response aspect of the music came straight from African origins and there were a lot of lines that would get duplicated thrice or more. This later developed into a line repeating twice and then on the third time around there would be an ‘answer line’. You will be able to still discover these aspects of early blues in modern day music, especially hip-hop.
The term ‘The Blues’ refers to the ‘blue devils’ which signifies down spirits or unhappiness.
The blues guitar brings a fundamental role in blues music as well as contemporary music. It has shaped Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass and even heavy rock genres The original blues of the early 1900’s, otherwise known as “poor man’s blues” was usually linked with hard times, oppressiveness from white folk, ruthlessness of the police, gambling, economic depression, floods, magic, farming and dry periods. This music was fueled by a lot of brokenheartedness and anger. Not uncommonly a lost loved one or an generic harsh environment prompted the lyrics and the tone of the blues guitar.
After the world war, you began to see blues songs that were about relationships and sexual activity. Also, wit was expanded to the mix. Here is a funny example:
“That must be your woman, cause mine don’t look like that… I said That must be your woman, cause mine don’t look like that… Have you seen my baby? She’s so big and fat…”
The blues guitar style came forth from the American South’s instruments of the time which were the banjo and the Diddley Bow. This was a home made one stringed instrument that was favourite in the early 20th century. Figures such as Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Son House and Blind Willie McTell were a part of the delta blues style which used a lot of finger picking techniques and slide guitar innovations.
Eventually, after WWII ‘electric blues’ became increasingly popular where the blues guitar was played on electric guitars as were the bass guitars. This was most prevalent in the Chicago area.
The history of blues guitar and poor man’s blues is rich with culture and stories of good times and bad. I could go on for days about the history of the blues guitar but let’s make this part 1 so you don’t fall asleep on me!

Guitar Lesson For Beginners – A Great Riff Which Sounds Fantastic In Any Rock/Blues Solo
Hi
Your friend Mike here from KillerGuitarTips.com with another Free Guitar Lesson
This article is will explain to you a cool little riff that sounds great in any rock/blues solo.
Looking at the blues scale in A minor. We need to add two notes at the 7th fret on the 1st and 2nd string creating a great pull off riff and we use the same finger technique on each string.
Let’s get started.
Play the 8th fret on the 1st string with your fourth finger and pull off to the 7th fret (held down with your 3rd finger) and pull off again to the 5th fret (1st finger). Do this on strings 1,2 and 3 and then for your final note play the 7th fret on the 4th string.
This is a great killer guitar riff.
Please bear in mind that these tips are in no particular order. But on my full guitar tutoring program it’s structured in such a way as to follow on in chronological order bringing the beginner through to great player in the shortest possible time.
Have a great week and stop playing when your fingers bleed!!! Only Joking…
I would jst like to give you one more FREE mini guitar lesson before signing off…
Here is a great pentatonic trick that will help you sound like a true pro in any solo. Simply learn the pentatonic scale on one string and then pull each note off to the open string.
So let’s take the 1st string (top E) and the minor pentatonic scale. So starting with the open E then 3rd fret (G), 5th fret (A), 7th fret (B), 10th fret (D), 12th fret (E).
Play the open E, then play the G and pull off to the open string. Then play the A at the 5th fret and pull off to the open string.
Simply continue this excercise up the string following the scale to produce a killer riff when all put together…
You may find these instructions a little difficult to understand. That’s because they are picked at random and do not follow a chronological order. However in my brand new audio, video DVD course to be released shortly I will show you step by step in a clear chronological order unique speed learning techniques that will have you progressing at lightning speed.
That’s your lot for this article. Next time I will have some more FREE guitar lessons for you that I hope you will enjoy.
Enjoy
